Looking for Luhmann, Germany - Luhman - Family History & Genealogy Message Board - Ancestry.com

~ I thought I would show a post of a fellow researcher of the Luhmann name. The first time, I ran into Andrea Lang online while she and I were separately researching at Ancestry.com Later once again through the Rootsweb Hannover Kingdom mailing list. Here is an example with herpost and mine. Notice how I used to babble on and on, trying to throw everything out there.

We may have something here. I am frantically looking for my notes or Luhmann history. I do have ? Ann Meyer Or Ann ? Meyer marrying a Luhmann. But Nothing was said where this Meyer came from. I take it that she was a widow, and so was this her maiden name. Or was it her name when widowed.

I will definately find those papers so I can check dates and places.They start very early 1700's. It was done by a local man, who did have a Meyer there not related to me. Perhaps she could be related to yours.

I have a Meyer marriage with Margarethea Catharina Luhmann which happened later in their history. We have Valentine Luhmann and Henning Luhmann. There are many branches off of Luhmann tree. Pagel, Mueller, Schulz, Reinecke, Schlaphof etc. They were shepherds and cattle herders. In the early years, they intermarried amongst other shepherds and cattle herders. I have been wondering if the Ann Dorothy was maybe a branch of the Johan Juergen Meyer family. Ann and D"

I know, I should have shut up already. So I will now. I have to find another post of Andrea Lang's which explains that she found family in Missouri. I think with Mennerich or Menke name.

This is taken more or less from an old message board posting at Ancestry.com.

From the Greene county History book, see link.

~~~Robert Holm~~~~~
From Past and Present of Greene County, Iowa by E. B. Stillman,
1907
Pg. 643
Robert Holm
[There is a picture of Robert and his wife .]
Robert Holm, who carries on general farming on section 10,
Dawson township, is a native of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany,
born on the 16th of March, 1870. His parents were John C. and
Bernadine (Jensen) Holm, who were ikewise natives of that
country. The father, whose birth occurred in 1834,
died in Clinton, Iowa, in 1901, while the mother is still living there. In
the family were five children, of whom four are yet living: Philip, a
resident of Clinton, Iowa; Robert; Morris, who resides in Dawson, Iowa;
and Julius, who is a minister of the German Lutheran church, now
located in Texas.
Robert Holm was reared on his father's farm in Germany, and
had the advantage of good education in the public schools of his native
country. He was a youth of sixteen years when in 1886 he came to
America, his home being established in Clinton county, Iowa,
where he worked at farm labor for a few years. He then made a
visit to his parents in Germany, but was told that he could not
remain for he had left the fatherland in order to avoid serving in
the army. He then induced his parents to sell their property in
Germany and come to the new world with him. This they did and
the father purchased one hundred and sixty acres of
land, up which Robert Holm now resides. The son remained with his father and
assisted him in improving the farm until the latter's death, when he
purchased the place. He now has a fine property, on which he has
put six miles of tile, thus pr"............................Mr. Holm votes with
          the democracy, but has never had desire forthe honors and emoluments of office.
          He and his wife hold membership in the German Lutheran church and
          are well known in the community as representative young people,
          interested in all that pertains to progress and advancement in the
          community. Mr. Holm has led an active and useful life, industry
          being oneof his salient characteristics and the basis of the success
          which he has  achieved.
That was the rest of the article about Robert Holm.
Would you like to see the picture? I will see if I can hunt it up.
Note: Made possible by google reader. You can read nearly all of this book.
See the privacy policy at margin on the right.
Genealogy with Lena B. Carstensen and Robert Holm surnames in Greene county Iowa.
It is amazing how one can over look a few little facts. Check out who else was from Jackson county Iowa and belonged to the Farnhamville area St. Peters Luth. church by Webster, Calhoun and Greene county Iowa.
Note: You remember Carstensen was second wife to our J.H. Williams son, Johann [first born ] William Meyer. And I think this is her family. His first wife was A. Grote. And yes J.H. Fred had a William as a son also, but he was born after 1882. And this is the same Carstensen family. Also relation to Nahnsen who did come from Clinton county, Iowa. Most of those from Sch. Holstein germany did come from Clinton county.From the Green biographie book of Greene county, Iowa
On the 7th of March, 1893, Mr. Holm was united in marriage to
Miss Lena B. CARSTENSEN, who was born in Jackson county, Iowa, on the 1st of January, 1873, and is a daughter of Godber and Dorothea (JOCHIMSEN) CARSTENSEN both natives of Germany. [The text is blurred here. The date '1st of January, 1873, and the names may not be spelled correctly.] On emigrating to the new world they became early settlers of Greene county, Iowa, and the father died in Dawson township in 1891, but the mother is still living. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Holm has been blessed with five children: George J.; Bertha; John H., who died at the age of four and a half years; Bernard T.; and Theodore J."
My mind is doing a little happy dance. Robert HOLM and CARSTENSEN are not new to me. But I happened to read my notes in my special book and saw that Robert HOLM was in Jackson county Iowa. According to this little clip from the Green book of Green county, Iowa, the CARSTENSEN family was from Jackson county or at least Lena was born there. Years ago, when I began searching Farnhamville, I had read a clipping given me by our special helper Christi Chance about her family's' Carstensen from Clinton county Iowa role as a founding father in the development of St. Peters church in the area of Farnhamville.
I assumed they were from Clinton county and no where else in United States, which one should not do in research
You know of course this will bring more searching action with the name Holm and Carstensen. And of course I will have to check the book and other research areas for more about each name to see what else comes up for the home area of Jackson county. I guess, I will have to locate that article again, and some research by Merna Hansen on St Peters church members to review. Of course, I will share it. [lol]
I have been kind of searching here and there to see a common denominator among family and friends. What brought Fred Meyer from Jackson county to
Greene county.
***What brought Fred Meyer from Jo Daviess county Illinois across the river to Jackson county. And does it have anything to do with a Goose Lake?
** Soon, I should show you a map of Jackson county, Iowa.
Note: Something to think on: Where Fred lived in Jackson county Iowa, where some of his Schenk lived, where he got married at Maquoketa ; all of these places are a great distance apart in Jackson county Iowa. It will be important to know who lived exactly where in 1870 there. Verl Matthews has done a lot of research on the family Nahnsen from Sch. Holstein going way back, which I have not shared here.
I may need to review some of the Nahnsen information at Ancestry.com.
just little excited me, jo
***Note: Be sure to hit previous or check the archives, and the search box to learn more of new aquired information on Fred's activities in Galena, Jo Daviess and Jackson county, Iowa, Amerika.
Scam Email "Re: From Steven John, from ... I Your Business Partnership." from "stjohn142" in ScamdexDB
I hope your all being careful, there a few new kinds of scam letters being sent out. Usually they are worded the same way. The one I saw lately was from the person below. I suppose he took my email from the internet from some source that I had posted. I have to admire this guy for being creative. I have always said to hubby that if they used their smarts, I would be tempted to fall for it. by that I mean it because I do have shirtail relatives in Africa somewhere, somehow. If not there maybe New Zealand or Papa Neu Guinea. This one at least led me to believe there was a Meyer person in Africa. But the words "bank " and "get rich" discouraged me immediately.
Come on conspirators, and future prisoners, get more creative and more smart.
My Heins family [who connected with the Meyer] lived in the Bergen kries Celle area by Hermansburg. Many of Maria Dorothea Heins ancestors and distant cousins had attended Hermansburg to take up Missionary work to go where ever there was a calling. I especially have found the name with connections back to Bergen with name Hohls,who connect to Meyer and Dagefoerde. The scammer could at least do his homework.
But then children, if your reading this, That is why they are scammers.
They didn't do their Homework, when they should have while young and in school!
