A birthday tribute In HONOR of Sylvia

Sylvia Meyer's birthday is this week, so I thought maybe a little post would be nice. It's funny, but not really, that I have been thinking, so heavily these days of her and Dewey Meyer. I bet all the pictures I had placed on the puter are gone, I'd have to scan a few again. In this photo above you see mother Sylvia holding Sissy, and Dewy is holding Sonny.
Here the visitors of the family we find the Pauline Nahnsen and Carl Seil from Calhoun county Iowa. They came in company with their Parent who was Herman Henry's sister. Two of his sisters Frieda and Mary married Nahnsen brothers.

Also visiting this evening was Amanda and Lyle Meyer. I am not sure where their little Mary is instead of also being in the picture. Mary was born three days after Sissy on the seventh. I believe the photo was taken in December 1950.

I found this photo of her mother at Ancestry.com I am so pleased to show you the resemblence of Sylvia's mother to herself. Especially the hair. I had only seen her as an older person. Actually all photos I have have been of her in the older stage of life. { I would love to find something of her father, pics of William or even his brothers to see those facial features particular to her maternal family.] I see the resemblance perhaps in the face shape

It is hard to believe that she has been gone from our life for six years now.

I remember Sylvia as usually full of laughter and teasing, usually when in a group of those she felt comfortable around. She really liked to spread her talents and help others in need. Like baking a cake for other people's occasions. Or one by making some little girl some curtains out of her fabric scraps. Lots of times it was just giving away many vegetables from her garden to friends.

Sylvia was mother, a hard worker, a chicken raiser, a gardener, a scrapbooker, collector, and quilter, among her other talents.

I have to rescan the photos I have of Sylvia in her youth. So I hope to do that when I can.

Genealogy: Webcams at our Ancestors locations.

A work associate and I were discussing names with the ' dorf" ending,. Well, if you know me, you know I just had to look up her name to see if it was an actual place name like I thought it probably was. . And it is. It is often the case that our names reflect where they were from. It could be Switzerland, maybe, Germay, Russia, and Norway. {I am not sure about Sweden, because they often use nature as inspiration for a name. [Though Husby is a farm name and a surname.]}

I might add that though there is a village the same as your name, that does necessarily mean that your family came from there. I have talked to several people who have the name Nahrendorf, and they are not from there. The same for some with the Dahlenburg name. I am not sure why this happens. If anyone knows, you sure can tell me. It might have something to do with a Herzog or count, who names a place he is in charge of, but doesn't live there.

Well I was off into looking up the name Follendorf. I ran across one hundred sixty five entries for the name at rootsweb world connect. One entry was this one takng the family to Germany, but no specific area mentioned. Most settlers were in Wi. i suppose I could have gone into other family members to see just where they came from, which is my usual trick for hints of origination of my ancestor.

But I didn't. So I went on to my next best bet which was the Google tool. Indeed it was not to let me down with 19,700 entires for the name.
I was distracted by the various search engine accounts that exist everytime one enters a surname or what resembles a surname. You find not only the english, but the german ones as well. I often find 123 xxx search coming up. I did click on one or two. I couldn't resist to see what comes with the name Follendorf.

I already had seen the linked in names of peoples private business. [ What ever that is.] As well as entries at face book.

The very first entry was this one. Which contained main heading of Flandorf Austria.

So I hastened my result with the inclusion of the word map. I could have made other specifics google categories, but I chose not to make the location so easy. The result was ninty one of a hundred of the 19,700 entries.

I already know google has it's maps of all sorts. Satellite, and regions and other various categories at the click of your fingertips. Adding the umlaut for 'o' i narrowed 300 entries to ten from 5, 300 entries for map Follendorf. I could hop to wikipedia or any other encyclopedia including a Britanica set on my shelf.
I settled at Nona.net for the information.

Hohenfier, Is located at both Himbergen Uelzen and Flatow

I thought I should do a little post about Hohenfier in Uelzen. Just in case some people are looking for a name or two.



I found the surnames and numbers in the book kindly written by Heinrich Porth.



But first I should address the name of the village Hohenfier location. If you punch in the name at rootsweb world connect search you may receive surprising results; if you were actually expecting it to be about the area of Uelzen.

There is another area with the village name of Hohenfier. Just as one finds the name of the village Husby. One finds it in South Trondelag and Sweden and North Germany as well. The other village Hohenfier , Flatow, Grenzmark, Prussia.
So be sure you know which you are really needing to look to find.



The Himbergen area of Uelzen is located up near the Elbe river which flows north. This area. Is often called Lower Germany. The people often speak Low German Or Low Dutch, or Plattedutsch. It is on the west side of the river over still a great deal. Hohenfier is close in kilometers to Roethen. You will find many websites about the forestery of Hohenfier. In my research of those who resided there often had the occupation of forester.
