I always get tickled pink when I get new lists of Gevattern  or god parents for  my individuals and this time the names ring familiar.    Are you  ready to get all pink and tingly?   So here goes.

That's all of the church record about her for the time being. I  want to post her children soon. 

However your not off Scott free yet. There are  still small details  to be discussed.  I  wonder if you noticed the small changes in her name. They usually have that  first name of three names  that they don't really use. But we were only given two.   Sometimes she was Katharine and other times labeled Catharine and Catharina and the 'C' and  'K '  letter changed from time to time. I tried to give exactly what I saw in the  church record.
You may have noticed in the marriage document of the trauregister she was  formally Katharine Dorothea Ahrens and so her mother was Katharine Dorothea Elisabeth  too. Later when it mentioned her baptism and her death she was Catharina just as her mother was Catharina. In regards to the mother they always included her third in the line of  names -  Elisabeth. 

It's interesting too that Catharina  is in the names of the  Godmothers  or Godmutter.  Notice the intermix of the name Magdalena and Margaretha.

If I am trapping  you here, I might as well make it good, so here's the other  important link.  Eventually I'll help you with that. Up at the left side of the page 72 from Heinrich Borstelmann's book about the hofs of Mucklingen you will see HalbHof 5.  Down on the line of the year 1815 we find the Eh. zw. which is the marriage of her parents.  [I suppose it goes with out saying all the references to Seil in Breese that we can do without now.] Without church proof we see more of their family history. Something I can't get into right now.

Filling Your Mother's shoes

When I was a little girl I tried to fit into my mothers shoes.

I'd walk around the house wearing her shoes as if I were her. When I was older and my little family was going to be two plus one and then later one more. I tried at times to again to fill my Mother's shoes. I imagine I do try to fit in all the mothers shoes [roles] by the women of our family. Genealogy related - Military Forts of Wyoming and Nebraska- Ritterling, Seil

I read at Dear Myrtle genealogy blog about free acess to U.S.Military records so I hurried on over there. www.ancestry.com/military.

I had viewed a military record before of The Ritterling person, so I gave it another try. Luck was with me because I found again the write up of Mrs M. Ritterling. Record says continued from page 42 onto page 43. It says Wyoming state. It was the very one I had wanted to see again because it had been on my mind. I believe I had found the cemetery on line before which mentioned an unknown grave, but still I was able to learn whose it was. It will need further search such as local history books in area she actually lived.

I hope you can read it. It says she died from suicide 8.july. 1884 . It makes one wonder why?
Okay, I thought Mrs M might be Mary, but this one shows up below the one above.

Interment Date 8 July 1884.
To meet the burial needs of the soldiers stationed at the post, a cemetery was established early in its history. The old post burial ground was later moved to southwest of the post and some 50 remains were moved to this location.
[You may need to think of the battle of Custard to recall some land mark areas. ]

*I had to read the information at the Cemetery of Fort McPherson, [Nebraska] to learn that Margarethea was actually buried at Fort Robinson first and moved along with others. The record show above says she was a Siel or Seil. The immigration information gives further information on the family Ritterling. Nothing concrete.

Establishment of the 20-acre Fort McPherson National Cemetery in 1873 afforded the space to relocate remains from the cemeteries abandoned when the number of settlers decreased. Burial records testify that life on the frontier was full of hardships and dangers similar to battlefield camps during times of war.

The cemetery lodge was built in 1876 and rehabilitated in 1951 and 2000. About one mile southeast of the cemetery a monument marks the site of the flagstaff of the old military post. Another monument marks the route used by the Pony Express over the Oregon Trail, which passes through the cemetery............................

...........................Other: Fort McPherson National Cemetery is the final resting place for 63 Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry. The soldiers were all buried at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, and were relocated to Fort McPherson National Cemetery in 1947 when Fort Robinson was deactivated...................................

......................An impressive white marble monument marks the group burial of 28 enlisted soldiers who were killed in an encounter with the Sioux on August 19, 1854 near Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory. The incident, commonly known as the Grattan Massacre after Lt. John L. Grattan who led the soldiers, is generally considered by historians to be the opening salvo in a 36 year period of intermittent hostilities between the U.S. and the Sioux Nation, ending with the massacre at Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1890. Lt. Grattan is interred at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas.

[Not all soldiers and people buried from Fort Robinson ended up at Ft. McPherson.]

Note: Henry Seil geb 1859-60, had a sister who emigrated along with him. He lost contact and later discovered she had married Ritterling and lived by Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Information was given by Pauline Seil and Carolyn her daughter. Nothing proven yet by myself.

Note: Buffalo soldiers were 'Black soldiers' who were in the ninth calvary and tenth after the civil war stationed at Ft/ Robinson 1885 - 1898 and 1907. Eighteen received highest honor with Medal Of Honor. Duty.... Honor.... Country

Trips to the Old Country

It is my greatest Dream to visit the churches of the old country of my grandparents and those other colonists of Farnhamville, Calhoun County Iowa. If I did so though, I'd have to stay more than a week!

I reread the postcard in the letter that Mr. Stein sent when he sent me the postcard from the Kannings from the Nahrendorf church. There was a note or letter behind the card! Reading it, I saw that he himself did not get the information, as I may have said somewhere at A Rootdiggerspot blog. I don't know which Kanning went on the trip to Germany. I am going to find out!

I understand why he did not look up anyone else while there. Schroeder and Saucke were their main interest. You would think though, that they would have checked on Heinrich Seil. Would they have been seeking more of the Saucke family and the Schroeder family? Perhaps their other information was in Dannenburg. Also I am sure time was a factor. The Kanning family are not from this area by the Elbe River. They resided much more west.

Kannings are involved with these surnames of Oldendorf / Nahrendorf and Duebbekold:
Nahnsen/ Meyer, Heinrich Seil [geb. * 1859], Friedrich Schroeder and Elisabeth Saucke.
Possibly Another Seil family at Joliet, Illinois.
I am sure I forgot a few.
I wonder if they also went to see the Dahlenburg church archives. Since Maria Elisabeth Saucke's family also lived at Ahndorf by Boitze and Neetzendorf. [ I suspect connections to Tosterglop and Gut Horn as well.]

I was contacted by others interested in my information on Ahrens, Seil, Grote, Naefke surnames in the Calhoun county Iowa area. So this blog topic is aimed towards those interested in the Ahrens, Naefke, Seil, Nahnsen, Meyer families. If your going down that path one would not be able to eventually ignore the surnames of Schroeder, Saucke, Carstensen..

As you read this blog, you might want to check out this other blog about people from Oldendorf. Especially for the names Grote, and Seil. I still do not know exactly what their village was in area of Oldendorf. If I had stopped blabbering long enough on the telephone during our conversation, I might have learned more.
Right Mark [Kuhlman relative]. The Grote and Ahren families who attended the St. Peters church near Farnhamville church location is said to come from Oldendorf. If not from Oldendorf, I wonder what little village did they really come from.

So family we are definately related to Elmer Kuhlman family of Lewisville area. The Elmer Kuhlman family. With more correspondence I will learn much much more, which I can share with you. [After I hung up the phone with further thought, I now suspect that I saw something of it at Ancestry trees or public trees, but forgot about it.] I suppose I had intended to spend a little time on it later and I still do.

One more answer to the riddle. I sure hope I can remember those details that he told me.

Note: Mark told me that Seil use to own a gas station in Lewisville. That was news to me. I know our families owned all of them at one time. As well as one at the ten mile corner. I thought William had one in Lewisville too, until he moved to Fairmont and ran the one under the Poppe name.

Note: Mark also told me that the Grote family lived only a year or so in Iowa and then went to Arkansas. I knew that Adelia had lived with Naefke there. I wonder if she married there? Did Naefke move there as well. See this is maybe why Herman and Annie gave some thought to living in Arkansas. In one letter from Annie Bennett there was a statement she made to Herman. She said, I see you decided you did not want to pick rocks in Arkansas. Meaning living and farming there and picking rocks. Instead he chose to live at Sunnyslope farm at Minnesota.

Note: I must ask him [Mark] if he knows where William lived in Fairmont. Was it North Park near the Hamlins.

Note: Were Grote from Gutting or Goeddingen? And where were Naefke actually from In Hannover?


I really have a few things to hunt up for him. I had better get busy.


*A personal Note to Mark Kuhlman:
If you read this or other pages- your really have to read about the Luhmann family of Eichdorf. Because there was another Seil family involved which was told to me by those who married with the Bluhm family.
You can correspond online with the Nahrendorf church, I can make it easier for you by hunting up the web address for you from my older emails. Your correspondence only confirms that I have to ask Herr Bock about the various Seils that I have found in records. Including my Anna Seils gr. great grandparents. I will find a linkage for you.

*Not only that, but Grotes did show in the Uelzen book at Hohenfier that Heinrich Porth wrote of in his book on Himbergen OFB. There is a Christoph Seil in it.
Also, I would like to mention that some of my Heins and Seil lived at Breese and that is where some other Grotes lived. Including Graf von Grote. One of those descendents has contacted me. !!!

* Third thing to note. On our Passenger list of the Marsala ship, was there a Puffahrt or Putfahrt? I thought I had seen it. Is anything known of that gentleman. He was in the area of Dannenberg which could be any of those villages by Oldendorf which belonged to Dannenberg. Also there were Puffahrt living at the Hitzacker villages.
*A man by name Puffahrt is researching many specific surnames in our area of Oldendorf, Hitzacker area of Elbe river area and Dannenberg area. He can be found on the Kingdom of Hannover mailing list courtesy of rootsweb. What is particularily wonderful is the information he throws back to the list on surnames of the region that we might find interesting.

* Fourth. I should have said Luhmann moved to Ottertail, Minnesota. The other Meta Luhmann was at the area I told you. Quast, Dirk, Banit and others from Dahlenburg Jonas tree.

* I made an error. Dorothy Seil of the Henry Dohrman tree settled Joliet Illinois and then later to Iowa with Farmhamville connections. Tasler, Vogel Tree. [Roper related to Tasler]

* I need to find out if any of the Grote and Naefke and Ahrens lived in Illinois prior or after the others went to Iowa. Although ship passage said Iowa. Who did they know who had gone before them to there?
* Fifth. I have had a particular interest in Ahrens, since I have also seen the name spelled Arens.
1. There were some Arens involved with Heins. Otte, Brookmann and various other surnames at Bergen Celle.[ Some mentioned before.......Drewes, Bockelman, Mueller,Drogemueller, Meyerhof, Hohls,Holes, Dagefoerde, etc.
11. There were Ahrens in the Genzel tree of Oldendorf. Hof 30. And the Sueschendorf hof tree which were surnames of Reinecke, Schroeder, Meyer, Schulz, Michel, or Michael and Ros[s]eburg. There were immigrations of this family tree to America.

I think, I am missing the burial record number at the end. It will take me some time to find the original copy to see, if it was there, or just cut off. I do believe this record was emailed to me from the Nahrendorf church. Of course it was done by Herr Bock. He had not remembered my name as the one, who had requested the information before. So he had resent the records that I already had. It was too bad, cause I bet my records arrived a day or two later after he sent me the email of information. I had hoped to save him from having to look up something that he had already done a few years back.

It is interesting that the family name spelling starts out as Lumann. You know Mrs Schlaphof[f] also went by the spelling Luman. At least, that is how she is named at the cemetery. I did translate the church records. But, I have forgotten what I learned. So, I won't be able to use that translation for you right now. I will come back and do so. As soon as I get a chance.

Note: My other records Of the Luhmann family have already informed us of Johann Juergen Luhmann's parents. They were Juergen Heinrich Lumann and Catharina Elisabeth Gehrke. Johann Juergens godparents were his fathers sisters husbands. However, in older records the Seil family was mentioned as being from Lueben and Breese.

[ I haven't made any connections yet between those Seil and any other Seil name I have acquired. None of those in Iowa. Not Henry Seil, who married Marie Ahrens nor August William Seil, who married Annie Vogel.

The Gehrke son's marriage to Luhmann is the first time that I have seen the Gehrke name mentioned in my history of Luhman, or any of my Meyer ancestors. I think his father was Andreas Gehrke. [Previous post].
Note: We will see this information in the village of Duebbekold in Heinrich Borstelmans book.

It is interesting to me that Anna Maria's mother is a Brese from Nahrendorf. In the very early years there was a marriage to Luhmann by name Brese or Brase from Nahrendorf.

Notice the place of residence for Catharina Maria Harwegen is "Boetze". That is how it was spelled in the OFB Himbergen book written by Heinrich Porth and gunda Friesch. Bötze. We have been assuming it is suppose to be the same as Boitze, which is very close to Neetzendorf. As is Ahndorf, Finndorf or Findorf.

The god parents info has been a surprise. Ms. Harwegen is probably Harweg[e]. If I go back to Behrens - Meyer records, I will find a Harwege.

I just love church records. I went through this one briefly to cover the little details. Soon, I would like to cover some of the same surnames. As a result of this church document, I am now thinking that the Johann Juergen Meyer family and the residence members of the Behrens family [hauswirths] at Neetzendorf had contact and connections with hauswirths at Eichdorf. After all Landowners sons had to marry other landowners daughters. If the ones are all taken at your village, wouldn't you have to look to other villages?

I dig into the Family memories about the Keepsakes of the Sunnyslope Farm - A vase and roses

Memories about the family keepsake

 The rose without a name

The Vase was made in Austria and it has been in the Meyer family at Sunnyslope for many years. The rose you see in the vase was a successful start from the rose from the Sunnyslope farm. So this rose is the same as that Hermann Meyer and Annie Seil had growing at the farm on the hill.

This is a wonderful old rose with pink color, with great scent, and it is very adaptable. But more so than the beauty of the rose in the vase; is the beauty of the memories that they bring to me. This rose and the vase have a little history behind them. I hope I can bring some of that to light for you. I hope I can figure out the most of the story of both of them.


The  unnamed rose in my estimation was so worth the labor of its keep. The scent of this rose is to me is heavenly. Every time you passed through the gate to the farm area you got the scent. In the morning, I think it was like a gentle well wish to you on to your way to your task. You know how a person can be at five o'clock in the morning. And a pleasant greeting of the scent at the end of the evening as the farmers returned from the barn or the field at the end of the day. [One has been laboring in the hot sun all day in the fields or around the stink in the barn, it would definitely be a wonderful refreshing smell as one passed through the gate.]

The farm had belonged to another family before he purchased it. They might have been Miller once or others.   I am told that they visited once and heard about the mishaps and the changes that the farm had gone through. In their old age, they could see the maple trees still standing that they had planted. These were now huge and gave more shade than they had, when they began the farm.
The new owners would proudly show them around and ask the questions they were curious to hear. I wish I knew, if the old owners had planted the pink rose. If they had loved that rose too. No doubt they could have taken away a start of it to their new home. It would also have been a sentimental keepsake of their old home. Looking at it, smelling it, would bring up memories of the old days on the Sunnyslope farm. I don't know, if they even called it Sunnyslope farm too .

Annies grandfather, August Seil and his wife Anna Vogel had a wing in the old house to themselves. I am not sure exactly what August did on the farm, but it has been said that he had a green thumb. I am sure the pink rose held memories for Herman of the old days; when they were all there together. Maybe the rose held memories of their homes in Iowa. And the people they associated with there. Maybe, they got the rose, when they first married. And together made plans to planted it at the Sunnyslope farm.

I am thinking that later, maybe, the rose was passed around between farmers wives. Perhaps it sits still in an old cemetery; plaguing the caretaker to this day. So if any one in the neighborhood had this rose passed to them; I might have hope of finding the name of the rose. All I would have to do, is see if any one in that area, has the rose and knows its name.

Also, I also think,, if I can compare the roses of this time period I might be in luck. Some day, I will spend a little more time sifting through some rose books; or look on the Internet sites of roses. I can then find the dates of origination of some older roses. I know there are a few older roses that I have seen, which resemble this one. Maybe that will help pin point the possible time of planting. The time factor could help me identify the plant. Gosh, there is always puzzle solving, isn't there?

I know I am a day dreamer full of hopes. I have sure daydreamed here a bit. What else can a child that was a book worm be. I often wonder how it was in the ancestors lives those with these possessions that they often left behind. [I guess that is why they stress the hardships in their day.] I think they would be glad to know that a child they never knew about has a big appreciation for its beauty and the memories it holds. I hope you have too.

Also, maybe by now you understand, why I have kept that old vase, which is so scarred by time. I know a little of their story. A little about the owner. I know the beauty of their soul that made them keep these pieces, which were a part of their memories. There is beauty in the eye of this beholder, and I hope in yours too.

A Rootdigger Gets More Church Records In Answer To Her Questions

When I received the church documents of Juergen Friedrich Meyer, a landowner at Oldendorf and park ranger at Roethen, I naturally had questions about all the godparents listed. I mean those are the names that give clues, so I can read between the lines. So I asked questions and received the answers below. Nothing that really pertains to me. Yet???

First - This was the most important question to ask. Who was the  Meyer god parent of our Juergen Heinrich Friedrich Meyer geb.1851.  The brief explanation did not help much to supply meaning to any reading between the lines.

Juergen Friedrich Meyer's parents were Hauswirth Johann Heinrich Meyer of Sueschendorf and his wife Marg. Dor. Seil.


Second- There sure were a lot of residents at Sueschendorf! I guess I was partly confused about the noun "Schulze" which is an occupation as well as a name. In this case, I guess it is another word for Mayor. Another conotation for the word Schulze is that there was a time, when a person married a widow woman with land. At his marriage his last name changed to the womans last name. I thought this might have been the case. But it was not.


Second, Sometimes villages are formed by a person called Schulze. He is given this power by some noble person. It would be some kind of reward. I had wondered, if that was the case. I have found a few Meyer at Oldendorf. And like those, I do not know if they connect to mine.


Thirdly - I had asked who this Wilhelmine Meyer could be? So I was given two answers which I have partially translated.
